We value everyone that helped us identify new opportunities, so we wanted to show our appreciation! Since we love gadgets, we thought by offering an iPod Nano to EVERYONE that refers a new small business with 5 or more computers, would be a cool gift! New business =New iPod
Let’s have a great year

Naperville is the town that had the most computer viruses.
Wheaton had the most computers damaged by power outages and lightning
Wheaton was also the the town with most damaged hard drives, Downers Grove was a close second.
We fixed nearly 800 computers and networked over 300.
Technology can be a great time saver or the biggest time waster.
Let us know how we can help.

Apple's recently-released iPad is a popular item this holiday season, so naturally criminals are using that to hook people.

I have seen so many 'Get a free iPad by filling out a survey' ads already," said Jones. "Kinect (for the gaming system Xbox 360) is the other one."
But usually these offers are just a ploy to get you to a site where you are typically asked for credit card numbers 'to cover a small shipping charge' or other sensitive information in order to receive the prize. Your credit information is used by the con artist for nefarious purposes, and you get nothing. Stay away from these kinds of offers, said Jones.
"Apple is not going to give out a free iPad. They are not going to authorize anyone to give out a free iPad."
Researchers at McAfee Labs also found this ruse running rampant on Facebook and Twitter.
"In the social media version of the scam, users take a quiz to win a free iPad and must supply their cell phone number to receive the results. In actuality they are signed up for a cell phone scam that costs $10 a week. "

Near-field communications chips allow for fast short-range wireless transmissions, and credit card companies believe that those transmissions are actually more secure than the mag-stripe technology on your current credit cards, Schmidt said in a discussion with reporters following his discussion with Web 2.0 Summit hosts Tim O'Reilly and John Battelle. Credit cards aren't going away for quite some time, but Google is interested in getting the technology out in front of developers in order to see what happens, he said.

Microsoft released an update to patch 11 vulnerabilities this month, including a critical bug affecting Microsoft Outlook users.
A month after breaking its record for the largest Patch Tuesday update in history, Microsoft released a much smaller round of fixes Nov. 9 with just three security bulletins.
The bulletins cover a total of 11 vulnerabilities across Microsoft Office and Forefront Unified Access Gateway (UAG). Just one of the bulletins is rated "Critical" – MS10-087, which addresses five vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office. Among those five is a rich text format stack buffer overflow vulnerability Microsoft considers likely to be exploited.
“The bulletin is rated Critical for Office 2007 and Office 2010 due to a preview pane vector in Outlook that could trigger the vulnerability when a customer views a specially crafted malicious RTF (Rich Text Format) file,” explained Jerry Bryant, group manager of response communications for Microsoft Security Response Center, in a blog post. “The update also addresses an Office vector for the vulnerability described in Security Advisory 2269637, which has been referred to as 'DLL Preloading' and 'Binary planting'.”
A second bulletin affecting Microsoft Office deals with two vulnerabilities in PowerPoint that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a malicious PowerPoint file, according to Microsoft. The bulletin is rated "Important" because user interaction is required to open the malicious file, Bryant blogged.
The final bulletin, also rated Important, plugs four vulnerabilities in UAG, which is part of Microsoft Forefront. The most significant of these bugs could allow elevation of privilege if a user clicks on a malicious link on a Website, Bryant noted, adding the update is only being offered through the Microsoft Download Center at the moment.
Josh Abraham, security researcher from Rapid7, said the critical bulletin should be at the top of enterprise patch lists this month.
"Based on the huge amount of patches from last month, some customers might be up to speed while others are still struggling to catch up – this would depend on the unique customer and the strength of their vulnerability management program,” Abraham said. “Another thing that is interesting is that Microsoft has been breaking their own records with the number of bulletins they are releasing in a given month. To help everyone overall, a better approach would be to keep a semi-constant rate of patches every month so that system administrators are not over burdened during specific months."
He added that administrators should also remain vigilant for attacks targeting the recently disclosed zero-day in Internet Explorer as well. That vulnerability has not been patched.
So far, Microsoft said, none of the vulnerabilities addressed in today’s update have been targeted by attackers.

Although you can't exactly poke her, Queen Elizabeth is now among the more than 500 million members of Facebook.
The British Monarchy on Monday launched its own Facebook fan page to provide news and information about the royal family.
More than 74,000 people have already "liked" the Facebook page. With it, users can see pictures of different members of the family, can get updates through their News Feed, and find events in their area.
Britain's royal family isn't new to social networking. In 2007, it set up a YouTube channel. The monarchy has been tweeting under the @BritishMonarchy handle since 2009, and announced that the Facebook page was live on the micro-blogging site. Earlier this year, the royal family expanded its online presence with an official photostream on image-sharing site Flickr.
"If you look at the royal forays into technology and social media, we were already pretty much everywhere," a spokesman for the royal family said in a Time report. "Facebook was really the last area we didn't have a presence."
A two-person team manages the monarchy's Facebook page. This same team also monitors the other three online profiles as well as the British royal family's official Web site. Shortly after the page went live at 8 Greenwich Mean Time, the team was already sifting through potentially offensive comments, according to Time. With a growing number of Facebook fans, however, the reception from users has been mostly positive.

The new platform additions, which were announced as part of Microsoft's annual TechEd event going on this week, are dubbed Hyper-V Cloud. This is essentially a blueprint for the software and hardware configurations that Microsoft's customers and partners can use to get a private cloud set up quickly and without changing hardware buying habits.
These configurations are highlighted in a new program called Hyper-V Cloud Fast Track, which sets each configuration up against the company's private cloud reference criteria. This goes hand in hand with a new Hyper-V deployment guide, which breaks down how 200 companies of varying sizes and server set-ups have created their own private clouds using Microsoft's software and cloud services pairings.
As part of the Hyper-V Cloud push, Microsoft has also partnered with server hardware vendors like Dell, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and NEC. For the past six months these companies have been working with Microsoft in mixed engineering teams to come up with hardware and software combinations that would meet the right specifications. IT buyers who are looking to use Microsoft's system can then identify the right hardware to get, which has effectively been given the thumbs-up for compatibility.

Adobe Chief Technology Officer Kevin Lynch demonstrated some ideas last week at Adobe's Max conference using first an Android-based Samsung Galaxy Tab and then an Apple iPad.
In the first demonstration, he showed Photoshop's content-aware fill technology that can add some smarts to the deletion of phone lines, ex-boyfriends, or other elements of an image. He used his finger to paint over an image of a grouse against a green field. After a few seconds of processing, the application filled in the area with more green grass.

I don't get it was there explosive or not?
Neotec
from the they-don't-teach-section-230? dept
It's always impressive when you see lawyers file lawsuits which suggest they're not entirely familiar with the law. Eric Goldman points us to a lawsuit filed by a Nevada lawyer, Jonathan Goldsmith, suing Facebook and two Facebook users for defamation, due to some mean Facebook comments.
Of course, Section 230 clearly shields Facebook from the actions of its users in defamation cases. As a lawyer, aren't you supposed to be aware of the law? There are some other oddities in the lawsuit as well, such as claiming both slander and libel for the Facebook comments. Normally, slander applies to spoken comments, libel to written. Now, I recall at least one case (in the UK, not the US), where the court suggested online forums were more like slander than libel, but it still seems a bit odd to see it in this case. And, either way, he claims both slander and libel. There are a few other oddities as well, including a claim that the mean comments on Facebook caused him to "seize" advertising on the site. I'm assuming he meant "cease"?
Yet again, it seems like sometimes even when people say mean stuff about you online, which might not be true, it's better to just shrug it off than filing a lawsuit, drawing a lot more attention to the mean things... and anything else that might get attention.

from the cyberlull dept
For all the recent talk of "cyberwar," with particular emphasis on the idea that hackers in foreign countries were bombarding US gov't and military institutions with constant internet attacks, it now turns out that "incidents of malicious cyber activity" against the Pentagon have been on the decline this year. There still have been plenty of attempts to breach the network, but it's a much lower number than in the past. And that seems to contradict what Pentagon officials have been saying.
Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn, who's been leading the charge for why the Pentagon should be in charge of cybersecurity, recently claimed that the frequency was increasing exponentially. Except that's not true, apparently. The NSA, who is the main group within the Defense Department that wants to handle cybersecurity, apparently had its boss specifically (falsely) claim that he was "alarmed by the increase, especially this year." Of course, there are still plenty of attacks -- no one is denying that, but it's even more evidence that the folks looking to use this to gain more power are clearly exaggerating what's going on.

All we know for sure about the Samsung tablet is that it runs Android and measures 7 inches, Reuters reports. Rumor has it that the tablet will be called either the Galaxy Tab or Galaxy Tape. It will reportedly run Android 2.2 on a 1.2 GHz A8 processor, with a Super AMOLED screen, 16 GB of internal storage, 32 GB MicroSD expansion, and weigh 0.82 pounds. Samsung's TouchWIZ user interface may be used, and the tablet could otherwise look like Samsung's Galaxy S phones.
Sounds promising but I think I will wait for a larger screen before I take the leap. Neotec

Has Google already created the follow-up device to its Nexus One? According to reports today from the UK, the Nexus Two (we’ll call it) is built, loaded with Gingerbread, and will be sold exclusively through Carphone Warehouse by X-mas. (Who?) A company based out of the UK, meaning if this rumor is true, Google must already have some plans to hook up with a U.S. retailer to distribute this puppy stateside, right? (more…)computer

Motorola has released an update to its Media Link software that includes a ton of new features like syncing of iTunes and Media Player files without having to pull your teeth out. After just a quick 20 minutes of testing, this update appears to have revived the software and might even get some usage from me. I’ve used DoubleTwist in the past and it always stays on my computer for 5 minutes before the frustrations kick in and I have to uninstall it, but this new Media Link looks like it’ll be a keeper.
Oh, this might only work with Motorola devices.
Download it here.
Cheers Jim!
